Trying to decide on the right towbar for your vehicle?

The two main types of towbars are flange towbars and swan neck towbars, with flange towbars being more suitable for commercial towing and less expensive, while swan neck towbars have a sleeker design and are less bulky.

Additionally, you can choose between fixed towbars, which are permanently attached, or detachable towbars, which can be removed. Keep in mind that not all towbar types are available for every vehicle, so compare the options available for sale to determine which one is right for you.

Fixed Flange

A fixed flange towbar involves bolting a towball onto a faceplate that’s permanently attached to your vehicle, making it an affordable and ideal option for heavy-duty towing.

This type of towbar is compatible with accessories and allows for the simultaneous towing and carrying of bikes. Additionally, AL-KO towballs and towing couplings/accessories can be easily attached.

Detachable Flange

Similar to the fixed flange, the detachable flange is both sturdy and adaptable. However, it offers the additional advantage of being removable when not in use, which means it won’t interfere with parking sensors. Additionally, it enables you to tow and transport bikes simultaneously. You can also attach towing couplings and other accessories to it.

Fixed Swan Neck

The fixed swan neck towbar has a more streamlined appearance, making it aesthetically appealing.

It is compatible with AL-KO stabilisers, but it cannot be used to tow and transport bikes concurrently. Additionally, it is less likely to trigger parking sensors. However, it tends to be more expensive than a flange towbar, and it cannot be equipped with a bumper shield.

Detachable Swan Neck

Similar to the fixed swan neck, the detachable swan neck towbar boasts a stylish design, and it can also be detached when not in use.

Nevertheless, like the fixed swan neck, it cannot be utilised to tow and transport bicycles at the same time. It is compatible with AL-KO stabilisers and is also less likely to trigger parking sensors. However, it cannot be equipped with a bumper shield.

Retractable Towbar

In just a few seconds, the retractable towbar can be concealed from view when not in operation. It provides comparable benefits to a detachable towbar.

Unlike a detachable towbar, however, you don’t have to detach the neck, so there is no risk of misplacing it. It also does not obstruct parking sensors or impede access to your vehicle’s trunk.
