What maintenance is required when owning a caravan or motorhome?

Owning a motorhome or caravan gives you the freedom to explore the open road and enjoy the great outdoors — but that freedom comes with a bit of responsibility. Regular maintenance is the key to keeping your home-on-wheels running smoothly, staying safe, and avoiding costly repairs down the line.
Whether you’re a weekend wanderer or a full-time traveller, here’s a comprehensive guide to the maintenance your motorhome or caravan needs throughout the year.

Engine and Mechanical Checks

For motorhomes, the engine and vehicle systems need the same care as any car or van — plus a bit extra due to long periods of storage. Key areas to check include:
• Oil and filters
• Coolant and brake fluid
• Battery health
• Tyres
• Belts and hoses

Timing belt replacement

Most motorhomes have a timing (cam) belt that must be changed at specific intervals (often every 5 years or 60,000–100,000 miles). If it fails, it can destroy the engine — so it’s one job not to ignore. Always check your vehicle’s manual or ask a service centre for your specific schedule.

MOT and Servicing

Motorhomes over three years old need an annual MOT, just like a car. This test checks road safety elements such as brakes, tyres, lights, and emissions.
However, an MOT isn’t the same as a full service. While it ensures roadworthiness, it doesn’t cover fluid changes or preventative maintenance. A full service should be done every 12 months or as per manufacturer guidance and typically includes oil changes, filter replacements, and key safety inspections.
For caravans, you won’t need an MOT, but an annual service is still important to inspect the chassis, brakes, and running gear.

Damp Check

Damp checks are recommended annually, especially if your motorhome is still under warranty. However, if your vehicle is older, has had damp issues in the past, or is stored outside, aim for a damp inspection every six months.
This is one of the most important services for motorhome or caravan owners, as damp can spread quickly through wooden frames and insulation, leading to expensive repairs if not caught early.
