New Caravan Registration Laws – 2025

As of 2025, any trailer or caravan with a gross weight over 750 kg now requires registration for travel in the EU. Travellers must have a separate trailer registration plate and certificate, which may be checked at borders. The registration process, completed through the DVLA, costs around £26 and should be done before your trip. Failing to register your trailer can result in fines or even denied entry when crossing into European countries.

• Damp & mould prevention: Ventilate, use dehumidifiers, check seals and roof linings

• Tyres & wheels: Check pressure, tread, and lift or chock wheels if storing long-term
• Brakes & towbar: Inspect and lubricate moving parts, check safety chains
• Battery & electrical: Fully charge, disconnect or use a trickle charger, inspect wiring
• Interior: Clean and dry surfaces, remove perishables, secure loose items
• Heating & plumbing: Service heating systems, drain water pipes, protect valves
• Security & Storage: Lock doors/windows, use coupler locks, and cover vehicle if stored outside
• Planning & Paperwork: Check Insurance, Registration, and EU trailer documentation.
